Car engulfed by flames after 'explosion' beneath railway line in Manchester city centre

This is the dramatic moment firefighters doused a car with water after it burst into flames beneath a railway archway in Manchester city centre.

A crew from Salford station rushed to Kelso Place, in Castlefield, at around 8.24pm this evening (March 25).

Footage filmed by a neighbour living in a flat close to the scene shows firefighters working to quell the flames and bring the fire under control.

At one point a train can be seen passing on the bridge above.

One resident told the M.E.N they had heard an ‘explosion’ just before the fire broke out.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed details of the incident.

They said: “At 8.24pm on Thursday March 25 firefighters were called to reports of a fire involving one vehicle on Kelso Place in Manchester.

“One fire engine from Salford station quickly attended the scene.

“Firefighters worked to make the scene safe using breathing apparatus, a house reel, a thermal imaging camera and break in gear.

“Fire crews were in attendance for approximately 40 minutes.”
