Car driven in to bus shelter and firebombed

A woman and man have been arrested after a car was driven into a bus shelter and then set alight.

The images show the structure in Terminus Road, off Liverpool Road has been reduced to a charred shell save for small fragments of its fire-melted windows after the fire this morning.

Now Merseyside Police have given shocking details on the 3.30am blaze, which is being treated as arson.

Police said emergency services were called to reports that a silver Vauxhall Zafira had collided with the bus shelter.

It is believed the car was then torched and four people in the car fled on foot from the scene.

A petrol can was found in the Vauxhall.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended to put out the blaze and fortunately nobody was injured during the incident, police said today.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "The incident is being treated as suspicious as a petrol canister was found in the vehicle."

Police confirmed a 39-year-old woman from Huyton had been arrested on suspcion of arson and drink-driving.

And a 51-year-old man from Stockbridge Village has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

They have both been taken to police stations for questioning as enquiries continue.

A police cordon remained in place today.

Detective Inspector Peter McCullough said: “Although two arrests have been made, we are still in the early stages in finding who was responsible for the incident this morning as we believe the fire was started deliberately.

“Our enquiries continue and we’d urge anyone who witnessed the incident or saw any suspicious behaviour in the Terminus Road area around the time of the incident, to please contact us."

He added: “If you have any information or witnessed the incident, either at the time or via CCTV or dashcam footage, please come forward directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers. Any information you hold could really help with our enquiries.”

This morning police tape remained stretched around the bus stop used by people waiting to get to several Liverpool destinations including Broadgreen, Old Swan and Edge Lane.

Acccording to Merseytravel's website it is a pick-up point for the Page Moss - Kirkby Industrial Estate Circular, 898 bus service.

No travel disruption has been reported as a result of the blaze.
