Car crashes through Wetherspoons window while diners sat at tables

A car that crashed through a Wetherspoons window narrowly missed dozens of pedestrians.

Emergency services were called to The Clairville on Wallasey Road in Liscard after the red Vauxhall Corsa smashed into the front of the pub.

It is believed that the car also hit a lamppost and a silver car on St Alban's Road before careering through a set of traffic lights.

The car then drove across the junction before smashing into The Clairville pub on the opposite side of the road.

Witnesses at the scene said that the incident happened at around 1pm and that diners were sat at tables inside the pub when the car crashed.

Paramedics, police officers and the fire service were quickly called to the scene to deal with the incident after people in the area reported that the driver of the car had been unwell.

Firefighters could be seen examining the car before attempting to safely remove it.

People who witnessed the crash told the ECHO: "It is lucky there was no one walking by, someone could have been hit."

Extensive damage has been caused to the front of the car and the pub with debris visible across the footpath, across the junction and up St Alban's Road.

The pub has closed for the day to allow the emergency services time to deal with the incident.

No road closures are in place but traffic is congested moving around the incident.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that a female pedestrian was injured but her condition, and the condition of the driver, is not yet known.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed.
