Car crashes through junction and smashes into shops after driver passes out behind the wheel

A car careered through a junction and smashed into two shops after the driver apparently passed out behind the wheel.

Witnesses said it was "incredibly lucky" no pedestrians were in the car's path when it hit the shop fronts on Prescot Road in Old Swan , by the junction with Green Lane, at around 3.20pm.

Damage was caused to the front of Swan Barbers and Liverpool Physio, while the car appeared to have been left a complete wreck.

Andy, owner of Swan Barbers, told the ECHO he was in the shop working when there was a loud bang.

He said: "He's come from Green Lane and gone straight through. I believe the driver had a pacemaker fitted and something has gone wrong with that, and he's not braked.

"Fortunately it was before the school's closed so there were no kids but it's incredibly lucky."

Andy said the driver, a man aged around 50, appeared not to have suffered serious injuries.

He said: "He actually walked out of the crash. He sat in the car for about 20 minutes but he was able to walk away."

Outside the shop damage could be seen where the car struck.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We were called at around 3.30pm today (25th June) to reports that a car (blue Renault Negate) had collided with a shop front on Prescot Road.
