Car crashes outside Edinburgh's James Gillespie’s Primary School despite 20 mph speed limit

Locals say primary children have had a 'lucky' escape after a car smashed into a bollard at a road crossing point outside James Gillespie’s School in Edinburgh on Saturday (November 28).

One concerned parent told Edinburgh Live that the area has "loads of issues with people driving too close to the school" and that "police actually patrol the area some mornings handing our fines to drivers."

Another local uploaded a picture of the smashed up car, penning: "20mph local road, right outside our primary school. Lucky it's Saturday."

James Gillespie’s School released a statement to parents and locals asking them to "slow down, not double park, not u-turn and not obstruct this junction."

In the statement James Gillespie’s School, said: "This is an important reminder for everyone as to why the school leadership team is out every day asking drivers to slow down, not double park, not u-turn and not obstruct this junction. On Friday, we had Council road traffic patrollers issuing fines for dangerous parking."

The Blackford Safer Routes Campaign shared images of the aftermath of the crash, penning: "We hope everyone is OK after this crash on Whitehouse Loan at the crossing point to the Links. Thankfully, a bollard took the brunt of the impact and not a child."

Edinburgh Live has contacted Police Scotland for comment.
