Car crashes on Glasgow M8 after gang of youths throw shopping trolley from bridge

Police are hunting a gang of youths who threw a shopping trolley onto Glasgow's M8 causing a car crash.

Officers were called out during rush hour on Tuesday to junction 10, by Glasgow Fort shopping centre.

Youths had pushed a shopping trolley from the footbridge onto the motorway.

The incident caused a driver to swerve and crash on the busy road when the trolley landed around two meters in front of him.

Ryan Duke, 22, from Glasgow, was driving home from work in a Citroen C3 when he saw three people standing on top of the bridge 'jumping around' before they pushed the trolley onto the motorway.

Warehouse operative Ryan said: "They were jumping around, it almost seemed in a panicky way.

"Then they ran off.

"It was then I saw the trolley bouncing on the road in front of me, just about two meters from my car.

"I didn't have time to react.

"I hit it at 70 mph.

"I wouldn't wish it on anyone, it wasn't a good experience.

"Also, my car is practically undriveable now.

"The people on the bridge definitely seemed younger.

"If there was anyone who saw anything, or anyone driving along with dashcam footage who can help."

Police have launched an investigation into the culpable and reckless behaviour.

Ryan was not seriously injured in the crash.

A force spokesperson said: “Around 5.40pm on Tuesday, January 5, police received a report of a car having collided with a shopping trolley while travelling on the M8 southbound at J10.

“Enquiries are continuing.”

Anyone with information has been asked to quote incident 2142 of January 5, 2021 .
