Car crashes into school bus arriving to pick up kids 'following police pursuit'

A car crashed into a school bus in Gorton following a police pursuit, witnesses have said.

A black Peugeot SUV has been left badly damaged after smashing into the back of a yellow school bus outside St Peter's high school on Kirkmanshulme Lane at around 3pm.

According to witnesses, no children were in the bus at the time as it was on its way to pick up pupils.

Three men fled the Peugeot towards the school and at least one was arrested, witnesses added.

A picture from the scene taken shortly after the crash shows a man in handcuffs by the police cordon.

"The police were chasing the black car, it was turning left into Kirkmanshulme Lane and the school bus was turning into the school St Peters," said one eyewitness said.

"As it's turned in the car's come round about 100mph and it's gone into the back of the bus."

"Three boys got out, two ran into the school, one round the other way.

"The police chased them into the school and lucky enough they arrested them."

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for comment.
