Car crashes into police officer next to Victorian highway

The officer was hit while he was standing next to his car.

A police officer has serious injuries after being hit by a car while he was standing by his own vehicle on the side of a highway near Geelong.

The officer was standing next to a marked police car by the Surf Coast Highway near Geelong when he was hit just before 1:00pm.

Victoria Police said the male sergeant was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening leg injuries.

The male driver, a 21-year-old Melton West man, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.

In a statement, police said they were "observing the vehicle prior to the crash in relation to an incident earlier today", but have not said why.

The crash happened at Mount Duneed, south of central Geelong.

The highway was closed in both directions between Lower Duneed Road and McCanns Road this afternoon.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
