Car catapults into the air and crashes through roof of house into garage

A dad-of-five had a lucky escape after a car became airborn and smashed straight through the top of his home - landing inside the garage in which he'd been standing moments before.

Train conductor Christopher Edwards must be as popular with God as he is with Welsh commuters after he narrowly avoided being crushed by the flying Kia Sportage.

The 57-year-old is something of a local celebrity as he made the news in August for singing popular tunes over train station PA systems while at work for Transport For Wales.

And locals in Newport, Wales will be pleased to hear that his latest appearance in the headlines has left him unscathed.

Christopher said the sound of the car hitting his house was like a "bomb going off".

He and his dog Diesel were in the house around 1pm today - Thursday, September 26, when the black car penetrated his dormer bungalow in Waterside Close in the Rogerstone area.

Christopher told Wales Online : “The engine was still running and the airbag had gone off – there was smoke and dust everywhere.

“The driver wasn’t very responsive though so I called 999 straightaway. The postman, who’d just been a few doors down, then managed to get him talking but we decided not to try moving him – best leave it to the emergency services.”

All three emergency services arrived at Christopher's bungalow and a driver, thought to be in his 50s, was taken to hospital.

Christopher said “it hadn’t been raining at the time and was dry out," meaning the cause of the crash is a mystery at this stage.

“But judging from the marks on the kerb he clipped it, lost control, and crashed through the hedge and went flying into the air. He then took out the front of the garage roof before landing and coming to a halt.

“Luckily I was in the living room at the time but just 20 minutes earlier I’d been in the garage having a sort out. So it could have ended much differently. Thankfully I think the guy is going to be okay too.”

Christopher, who is also a church warden and the lead singer of a Christian heavy metal band, said he and wife Antonia have been told they should be able to stay in the house while the damage is repaired, provided they stay well away from the garage end.

“We’re just waiting for someone to come and assess the damage and make sure it’s structurally safe,” he said.

“I’m not worried about bricks and mortar though – that can all get sorted. Just as long as no-one was seriously injured.”

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said they were called at approximately 12.46pm on Thursday to reports of an incident involving a vehicle in Rogerstone, Newport.

“We responded with one emergency ambulance and the crew were supported by the hazardous area response team,” the spokeswoman said. “One patient was transported to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called by the ambulance service at 12.50pm. She said they responded with two crews and had the stop message at 1.53pm.

"One casualty was assisted from the vehicle by the ambulance and fire service," she added.
