Car carrying gas canisters crashes into Dutch town hall then bursts into flames

A car carrying two gas canisters has crashed into a town hall in the Netherlands, killing the driver.

Police said the car burst into flames as it collided with the building in the small Dutch town of Bemmel, 100 kilometres (62 miles) southeast of Amsterdam.

The identity of the driver, who was found dead at the scene, has not been released but authorities said they had a "strong suspicion" about who it was.

There were no other injuries reported after the incident, which took place in the early hours of 22 August. .

A spokesperson for the fire brigade told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (AD) the police recently received a threat that might be linked to the incident.

The mayor of the town, Marianne Schuurmans, said she was not aware of any threat that had been received.

"That news surprised me,” she said.

"…I will have to wait for the police investigation. What I find awful is that someone was killed. My thoughts go out to the family."

Authorities said they are investigating the cause of the incident.
