Car buyers are firmly in the driving seat after new car sales slump

A slump in new car sales means buyers can drive a hard bargain.

Research found savvy drivers were able to negotiate a near £2,600 saving on the average new motor in the first half of this year.

But the biggest savings was a chunky £5,767, or a more than a fifth, off the advertised price.

Buyers are firmly in the driving seat after a sharp drop in new car sales. Sales fell 4.1% last year, the worst for seven years.

Researchers from What Car? visited dealers to see what the best deal they could get on a new car, by offering cash and haggling.

Citroen was found to offer the biggest average discount, at just under 12%.

Next was Volkswagen, at 11.1%, Vauxhall, 10.5%, and Seat, 10.2%. Mercedes-Benz came in at 8.7%, Ford 8.19%, Volvo 8.17%, Mitsubishi at 7.94% and BMW at 7.88%

But there were even bigger discounts on certain models.

For example, the average saving on a Volkswagen Passat 1.5 TSI EVO 150 S was £5,767 off the £25,495 on the road price.

Researchers also negotiated an average £4,755 - or 21% - off the price of a Vauxhall Mokka X 1.4T ecoTEC.

But if you’re looking for a big discount, steer clear of budget car maker Dacia, with an average discount of just 0.96%.

Also hard to haggle for were MG with a discount of 2.49% and Land Rover 3.3% and Toyota 4.23%

Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car?, said: “In this turbulent market we cannot stress enough the importance of doing your research when buying your next car. Some brands are offering buyers large savings, while others are using different tactics.

“Interestingly, there is a split between premium brands.

“BMW and Mercedes-Benz, for example, tend to offer big discounts, while Land Rover and Lexus are pursuing a policy of smaller price reductions.”
