Car bursts into flames on Merseyside motorway

A driver managed to escape from their car just before it burst into flames on a Merseyside motorway.

Pictures shared by Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit show a burn out car on the westbound carriageway of the M58 at Switch Island.

A tweet from the police praised a fellow motorist who spotted the flames and alerted the driver so they could escape before it took hold.

The tweet said: "Eagle-eyed motorists spots small fire underneath car at Switch Island and occupant is able to get out before fire takes hold."

It said that North West Motorway Police attended and Mersey Fire helped extinguish the flames, adding: "Just waiting for the vehicle to be dragged out of the live lanes."

It is not known yet what caused the fire, but there were warnings delays could remain on the motorway until this evening.

A tweet from Highways England warned that lanes of the M58 were closed westbound and asked drivers to take care.

The tweet said: "#m58 westbound on appraoch to #switchisland. Lanes 1 and 2 closed due to vehicle fire and debris in the carriageway. Please take care in area"
