Car bursts into flames on M9 sparking emergency response

A car has caught fire on the M9 motorway near to Edinburgh .

Emergency services raced to the major road near Newbridge just after 8pm this evening.

It comes at the country was gripped by scorching heat, with record-breaking temperatures in the capital.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but drivers have previously been warned by the RAC about engines overheating during summer heatwaves.

Dramatic pictures posted by Traffic Scotland show the vehicle completely engulfed in flames on the hard shoulder.

Two lanes had to be closed for around 40 minutes while emergency services extinguished the blaze.

At 8.10pm Traffic Scotland tweeted: "#M9 Newbridge towards Edinburgh - a car fire on the hard shoulder #BeAware".

They later added: "*CLEARED* at 8.45pm. M9 Newbridge - car fire now extinguished".
