The blaze broke out on Knutsford Road, just off Hyde Road, on Saturday evening.

He said the car started to 'pop a few times' and was leaking fuel.

"It was heading towards the bus and it was catching nearby house fences on fire.

"Fire crews arrived within minutes followed by police.

"Many people gathered, mainly locals, then when the police came they disappeared and my bus had to reverse and go on a diversion", he said.

A spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 9.34pm this evening to reports a car was on fire on Knutsford Road.

"One fire engine from Gorton attended. Firefighters used one hose reel and one breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

"We were on scene for about 30 minutes. There was no mention of any injuries.

"We informed the police as it was suspected deliberate ignition."

Transport For Greater Manchester tweeted about the incident, saying: "Levenshulme Road, Gorton closed between Ryderbrow Road and Brockhurst Road.

"This is due to a car fire. If you're heading this way, please seek an alternative route."
