Car blaze sees police seal off major road

A road was blocked in Old Swan this morning after a car caught fire.

Prescot Road, close to Tesco, was closed by police when a car caught fire in the middle of the road. Merseyside fire an rescue service sent one fire engine to the scene.

Fire crews put out the blaze, using a hose reel. Officers stayed at the scene to assist with clean up and told the ECHO that examinations at the scene have so far established the fire was not caused deliberately. No injuries have been reported.

A spokesperson for Merseyside fire and rescue service said: "[The fire service] was called to Prescot Road, Old Swan, on Thursday, February 2, following reports of a car fire. Crews were alerted at 11am and on scene at 11.04am. One fire engine attended.

"On arrival crews found one car well alight on the roadway. Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. The incident was handed over to Merseyside Police and fire crews left the scene at 11.26am."

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Just after 11am this morning (Thursday 2 February) officers on Prescot Road in Old Swan noticed a car on fire. No one was injured during the incident.

"Further reports and examinations at the scene have so far established that the fire was not caused deliberately at present. Emergency services remain at the scene to remove the vehicle."

The road was back open by 12.40pm.
