A driver will be fined after hitting a child with their car in a "minor collision" reported outside a south Canberra school, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred outside St Anthony's Parish Primary School in Wanniassa about 3.35pm on Wednesday, July 29.
An ACT Road Policing officer was called to the scene and reported the child, who was not a student at St Anthony's, had not been injured.
The driver is expected to receive an infringement notice for a traffic-related offence.
On Wednesday afternoon, St Anthony's principal Erin Marmont wrote to parents that a vehicle had "accidentally" struck the child at a school crossing on Wheeler Crescent.
"We are relieved to advise that the student is okay, and the matter was attended to promptly. Police were notified and responded to the incident," Ms Marmont said.
The principal said the incident was a timely reminder for motorists to take extra care, adhere to speed limits and be mindful of students walking or riding to and from school.
Ms Marmont also thanked parents and school employees who "immediately actioned compassion and care" towards everyone involved in the incident.
The ACT government recently built a new pedestrian crossing with traffic lights in Griffith to help students cross one of Canberra's busiest roads.
The crossing on Canberra Avenue near Burke Crescent in Griffith was built after a serious incident where two students from St Edmund's College were injured in a hit-and-run collision.
While the crossing was a welcome measure, the new principal, James Keeley, told this masthead it did not go far enough to ensure students' safety.
