Capuchin Day Centre prepares for increased demand following accommodation shortage

The Capuchin Day Centre is preparing for a surge in visitors due to the Government's stark announcement on emergency accommodation.

The Citywest Transit Hub has temporarily suspended new International Protection arrivals as the centre is at full capacity. The restriction does not apply to families with children.

Government staff warned the Capuchin Day Centre that demand for their services would likely spike following the announcement. The homeless shelter provides free breakfast and dinner to those who need it at its north inner city base.

However, volunteers are confident they can cope with the additional demand for their meal service. The homeless shelter feeds between 200-600 people per day, with numbers particularly high for dinner.

A spokesperson from the Capuchin Day Centre told Dublin Live: "As long as we know to expect more people, we can prepare for it and get through it. For example, an extra 20 or 30 people wouldn't kill us."

The charity has been in operation in Dublin for over fifty years. Volunteers also give out food parcels to the homeless every Wednesday morning from 8:30-11:30 am.
