Captain Tom's grandson calls radio station to reveal what he was like and his final days

Captain Sir Tom Moore's grandson has paid tribute to his 'go-getter' graddad who 'never slowed down for anyone'.

Tom Teixeira has revealed how his 100-year-old grandad 'always liked a challenge' in a heartwarming interview with LBC today.

Young Tom revealed that the NHS hero never imagined his 100-lap garden walk would turn him into a national hero.

The veteran eventually raised almost £33 million for the NHS through his fundraising activities, which earned him a knighthood from the Queen.

Tom told LBC : "He is what you see on TV. He's just a go-getter. He doesn't slow down for anyone, even at 100-years-old with a Zimmer frame.

"When my auntie set that out (the challenge) that was so private. That wasn't meant to go anywhere, the original challenge.

"That was just something for him because he always likes a challenge. He wanted something to do.

"He didn't just want to sit around. Getting up from his chair and walking up and down the garden - he wanted to do that as a little challenge for him. As soon as people got wind of it, the rest is history."

Mr Teixeira said meeting the Queen would have brought immense joy to his granddad as he was hugely patriotic.

He also shared how Sir Tom had greatly influenced him and his other grandchildren, instilling a stiff upper lip mentality in all of them.

Young Tom added: "He's been a great father figure to all of us. He'd speak to my brother about the girls he was dating.

"He'd always have a question 'how's work' and I'd be like 'it's good', it was really nice and that's what I will miss."

The WW2 veteran and beloved fundraiser died yesterday after contracting Covid, having been taken to Bedford Hospital on Sunday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today announced that there will be a national Clap for Captain Tom tonight at 6pm.
