Captain Tom Moore tops the charts as NHS bosses make him guest of honour at Nightingale hospital

Captain Tom Moore's NHS charity single has shot to the top of the UK iTunes chart.

The 99-year-old World War Two veteran has become a British hero during the Coronavirus epidemic by raising over £22m for the NHS.

Now his emotional collaboration with Michael Ball - in which the pair sing You'll Never Walk Alone - has beat off competition from Dame Vera Lynn and Katherine Jenkins' rendition of 'We'll Meet Again'.

He opens the track with the words: "Hold your head up high and don't be afraid of the dark".

It comes as NHS bosses announced the Yorkshireman would be guest of honour at the opening of the region's first Nightingale Hospital.

It sparked an incredible period for the pensioner, who raised the money by walking 100 laps of his garden. He'd initially hoped to raise £1,000.

As cash continues to flood in for his fundraising, Mr Moore said he was "honoured" to open the hospital.

“I am still amazed by the amount of kindness and generosity from the UK public who continue to give despite it being an uncertain time for many," said Mr Moore, who turns 100 later this month.

"I think the amount raised demonstrates just how much we all value the dedication and sacrifices made by our NHS workers. I have fought during a war and they are now fighting in a war too.”

Over a million people have donated to his Just Giving page to date. There are calls for the pensioner to be knighted.
