Captain Tom Moore’s daughter has stated that the veteran’s fundraising page for NHS Charities Together is to close at midnight, saying her father “needs to have a little rest now”.
On Thursday 30 April, Captain Moore turned 100, surpassing £30m on his JustGiving page on the same day as his milestone birthday.
On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the retired army officer was honoured with an RAF flypast and promoted to the rank of Honorary Colonel.
Speaking to the BBC, Captain Moore’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, said their family has told the centenarian that it is now time for him to rest, having raised money for NHS Charities Together by walking laps of his garden since early April.
“We’re said, ‘Look, take a little rest now’. But I think we know that he has touched the hearts of many people around the world,” Ms Ingram-Moore said.
“He’s definitely engaged us all and given us hope and unity. So, there will be legacy.
“We, as a family, have come a long way in these last few weeks, and we are working hard to look at what is the future, what’s the future legacy, but he needs to have a little rest now.”
Ms Ingram-Moore added that the fundraising page is going to be closed tonight on Thursday 30 March, stating: “No more walking for now.”
“He has insisted that he will be walking again but we’ve said, ‘Please, just take a little bit of rest,’” she said.
In addition to the thousands of birthday cards Captain Moore has received, he also revealed on Twitter that he was sent a card by the Queen for his 100th birthday.
“Just received a rather special birthday card from Her Majesty The Queen,” the centenarian tweeted.
The picture shared alongside the tweet shows Captain Moore standing while holding onto his walker and his royal birthday card, which features an image of the Queen on the front.
The royal family also shared a tweet about the Second World War veteran’s birthday, saying that his birthday card was delivered by the Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, the Queen’s personal representative in Bedfordshire.
“Today we join people across the UK and around the world in wishing Captain Tom Moore a very happy 100th birthday,” the tweet read.
Captain Moore has received birthday messages from numerous organisations and individuals, including Boris Johnson and the Duchess of Cornwall.
“Captain Tom, I know I speak for the whole country when I say ‘We wish you a very happy 100th birthday’,” the prime minister said.
