Captain Tom Moore pays heartbreaking tribute to Dame Vera Lynn after her death

Captain Tom Moore has made a heartbreaking tribute to Forces' sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn, following her death at the age of 103.

The passing of the legendary wartime singer, most famous for songs like We'll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover, was announced by her family on Thursday morning in a statement which read: "The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain's best-loved entertainers at the age of 103.

"Dame Vera Lynn, who lived in Ditchling, East Sussex, passed away earlier today, 18 June 2020, surrounded by her close family."

A number of famous faces rushed to pay their respects to Dame Vera, who recently returned to the top of the charts with a We'll Meet Again duet alongside Katherine Jenkins to raise money for the NHS.

And among them was Britain's newest national treasure, Captain Tom, who has raised an incredible £32million for NHS Charities Together after walking laps of his garden.

Tom, who is now a Colonel, referenced how much Vera's songs spurred him on during him time fighting for his country in World War Two and how she'd remained a real strength for him in years to come.

A post on his official Twitter read: "‘A real shame, I really thought Vera Lynn would live longer she’s been speaking so well on TV recently.

"She had a huge impact on me in Burma and remained important to me throughout my life. My thoughts are with Dame Vera Lynn's family at this sad time."
