Captain Tom Moore in hospital with coronavirus and pneumonia

Captain Sir Tom Moore has been admitted to hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

The 100-year-old was taken into Bedford Hospital, Bedfordshire, earlier today as concerns grew over his breathing.

His daughter Hannah said that he was previously being treated for pneumonia ‘over the last few weeks’.

Captain Tom, who raised millions for the NHS during the first national lockdown, tested positive for Covid-19 last week.

He is receiving treatment for the virus in a regular Covid ward and is currently not in a intensive care.

Writing on Captain Tom’s official Twitter account, Hannah: “I wanted to updated everybody that today my father was admitted to hospital.

“Over the last few weeks he was being treated for pneumonia and last week tested positive for Covid-19.

“He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing. He is being treated in a ward, although is not in ICU.

“The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible.

“We understand that everyone will be wishing him well. We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to.”

The World War Two veteran captured the hearts of the nation last year as he raised more than £30m for the NHS during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Captain Tom walked 100 laps of his gardens in the run up to his 100th birthday last year.

He was later knighted for his efforts and went on to bag a number one single with a cover version of the hit You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Thousands of people have been tweeting messages of support for the centenarian following the news.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote: “My thoughts are very much with @CaptainTomMoore and his family. You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery.”

Labour leader Keir Starmer said: “The whole nation hopes you get well soon @captaintommoore. You’ve been an inspiration to us all throughout this crisis.”
