Captain Tom Moore 100th birthday: Watch as Leith piper plays Happy Birthday to the hero fundraiser

A bagpiper from Leith has paid tribute to Captain Tom Moore as the Second World War veteran celebrated his 100th birthday.

Captain Tom stole the nations heart during the coronavirus crisis when he raised over £30 million for the NHS.

As part of his fundraiser, he walked 100 laps of his Bedfordshire Garden.

He received more than 150,000 birthday cards from people across the UK who wanted to thank him on his special day.

And Leith piper Louise Marshall found her own way celebrating Captain Tom's birthday, playing a rendition of Happy Birthday on Thursday evening.

Marshall, who is the official piper to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, has taken part Clap for Carers every Thursday, playing her bagpipes to the delight of locals.

But she told the Press Association she wanted to pay special tribute to Captain Tom.

“It was really special, absolutely.

“This is my sixth week or so because I played the week before lockdown as well. I get so much amazing feedback.

“Especially because it was ‘Colonel’ Toms’ birthday I thought I would play Happy Birthday for him.

“Everybody sang along and the rain stopped just in time as well. It was absolutely perfect," she said.

Videos of Marshall's performances have been viewed around the world, and she has even appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain.

She said she was proud to play for Captain Tom, adding: “Everybody’s staying completely safe and expecting me to play.

“I’ve just had so many comments online. A lot of people say it’s the highlight of the week.

“It’s sort of getting longer and longer – I think it lasted about 25 minutes tonight.

“In fact I just got a message saying ‘thanks for raising the spirits of Leith’. I’ll keep doing this until the lockdown’s over.”
