A national round of applause in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore will take place tonight, Boris Johnson has announced.
It follows MPs observing a minute's silence, with the Prime Minister asking people across the country to clap for the inspirational war veteran and NHS fundraiser at 6pm this evening after his Covid press conference.
The move comes after a social media campaign calling for the tribute.
The government is also backing a permanent memorial to Captain Tom to recognise his contribution to the NHS, the they said this morning.
Cpt Tom, a World War Two veteran, raised almost £40million for NHS charities in lockdown by walking around his garden, just ahead of his 100th birthday.

He sadly passed away yesterday, his family confirmed, after a short battle with Covid-19.
Mr Johnson told the House of Commons: “We all now have the opportunity to show our appreciation for him and all that he stood for and believed in.
“That is why I encourage everyone to join in a national clap for Captain Tom and all those health workers for whom he raised money at 6pm this evening.”
