Captain Marvel features a touching Stan Lee tribute

Captain Marvel is the first Marvel superhero film to be released since the death of Stan Lee and it pays tribute to the comic book creator in a rather touching way.

Lee died at the age of 95 in Los Angeles on 12 November. His death sparked an outpouring of tributes from people whose lives have been touched by the characters he created, including Spider-Man, Hulk and the original X-Men.

While Lee himself didn’t create Captain Marvel’s alter ego, Carol Danvers – that was Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan – it was his inspiration that propelled his peers to bring the character, played in the new film by Brie Larson, to the world.

The film’s directors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, may have found paying tribute to the legend in a satisfactory manner quite tough, but they succeeded in delivering something simple, effective and extremely touching.

Marvel Studios has reworked its opening trail – which usually features its ensemble of characters – to feature just Stan Lee, using images taken from his many cameos over the past 10 years; it’s a moment that will no doubt have everybody in the cinema whooping and applauding.

You can find a compilation of the best Lee cameos in the below gallery.

Captain Marvel is in cinemas on 8 March
