Captain Marvel breaks box-office record, becomes highest-grossing female-led superhero film of all time

Captain Marvel has broken another box-office record, becoming the highest-grossing female-led superhero film of all time.

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has crossed the $1 billion (£760 million) line, making it Marvel Studio's seventh most successful film.

Should Captain Marvel hope to climb to sixth, the blockbuster will need to gross an extra $150 million (Captain America: Civil War stands at a lifetime gross of $1.153 billion).

The Brie Larson-starring film also stands behind Iron Man 3 ($1.21 billion), Black Panther ($1.34 billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion), The Avengers ($1.51 billion), and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion).

Chances are, Captain Marvel will soon be overtaken as the highest grossing film of 2019. Avengers: Endgame looks set to break more box-office records upon its release 26 April, with tickets having already sold by the thousands. Demand has been so high that opening night tickets are being sold for a reported $1,000.
