Captain Marvel bombarded with negative reviews by 'sexist trolls' on Rotten Tomatoes

The Rotten Tomatoes page of Captain Marvel is being trolled weeks before the film’s release, seemingly due to Brie Larson’s comments calling for more diversity in film criticism.

Larson, who plays the title character, recently spoke out about the “overwhelmingly white male” ratio of film journalist she’s spoken to at junkets over the past few years in an interview with Marie Claire.

Ever since, the film’s user rating – set by audience members – has plummeted. Having had an 97% rating a few weeks ago, its score at the time of writing is 63%.

Despite Captain Marvel not being released for another two weeks, male users have posted reviews taking aim at Larson’s words.

“Brie Larson has already said this isn’t for me, I’ll spend my money elsewhere,” one user writes, with another adding: “Search the lead actress. Doesn’t want us going as a white male. I won’t go. I hope your movie is good without me.”

Another states that Larson “has made it clear” that ‘men need not attend this movie”.

Meanwhile, people who have actually seen the film are praising the performances of Larson and Ben Mendelsohn in particular.

Captain Marvel arrives in cinemas on 8 March.
