Captain Marvel 2: Brie Larson to return as MCU sequel officially in development

A Captain Marvel sequel is officially on its way, with Disney in negotiations with an up-and-coming screenwriter to write the script.

Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the forthcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, has been picked to write the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed the first film, will not return for the follow-up.

Brie Larson, however, will return as hero Carol Danvers. In the first film, set in 1995, she is introduced as a human woman living on the alien planet of Hala, who crash lands on Earth and discovers the secrets of her past.

Samuel L Jackson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan and Ben Mendelsohn also appeared in the film, while Larson reprised her role in Avengers: Endgame. The sequel is expected to be set in the present day.

Captain Marvel was one of the most successful films of 2019, grossing more than a billion dollars worldwide. Its follow-up will be the first female-led sequel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

WandaVision, which is due to begin this year, is a TV spin-off for Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision. It has been described as a hybrid comedy-drama inspired by Sixties sitcoms.
