Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn announces run for Congress. #BreakingNews #2022Elections

Concerns about treatment of January 6 hostages.

Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn has declared his candidacy for Maryland's 3rd Congressional District. Dunn, who defended the Capitol during the January 6th attack, aims to replace retiring Democratic Congressman John Sarbanes.

Dunn's campaign announcement prominently features the events of January 6th, placing it as a focal point in his quest for public office. Having received recognition for his bravery with the Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Citizens Medal, Dunn retired from the Capitol Police Force in December.

Newly surfaced information by Special Counsel Jack Smith sheds light on former President Donald Trump's actions and attitudes during the insurrection. According to former Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Trump displayed disinterest when informed about then-Vice President Mike Pence's evacuation to a secure location inside the Capitol.

Responding to comments made by Trump and Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who referred to the January 6th rioters as hostages, Dunn expressed no surprise at their statements. He highlighted that many of the accused individuals have confessed to their crimes, further discrediting the notion of them being hostages.

Reflecting on his decision to run for office, Dunn underlined the attempted whitewashing and denial of the events that unfolded on January 6th. He acknowledged the shift in the tune of several lawmakers who initially acknowledged the severity of the attack but later altered their stance after being influenced by Trump.

Witnessing the disturbing footage released by the Justice Department showing the chaos on the House floor on that fateful day, Dunn affirmed its authenticity, as he himself was present during the attack. He expressed disappointment that lawmakers who privately acknowledge the gravity of the situation refused to publicly condemn it, for fear of upsetting their party leader.

Dunn's campaign differentiates him from other candidates through his unique experience as a former law enforcement officer and his dedication to public service. While acknowledging that he is not a career politician, Dunn sees himself as a servant of the people who will prioritize their interests and actively fight on their behalf in the halls of Congress.

Recognizing the weight of this moment in history, Dunn believes that safeguarding democracy is of utmost importance. He asserts that pressing issues like a woman's right to choose and common-sense gun reform fall under the broader umbrella of protecting and preserving democracy, and stresses the urgency of preventing a decline towards authoritarianism.

Harry Dunn's candidacy emerges as a testament to his commitment to public service and his unwavering determination to defend and strengthen democratic values. As the nation reflects on the events of January 6th, Dunn's campaign advocates for accountability, justice, and the protection of democratic principles.
