Robert S. Mueller III, a Marine veteran and former director of the FBI, who, as a special counsel, led an investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, died on March 20 at the age of 81.
Mueller was nominated by President George W. Bush and became the sixth FBI director on Sept. 4, 2001, just days before the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington.
His probe into Russian electoral interference and the potential involvement of President Donald Trump and his campaign concluded in 2019 with a report running nearly 450 pages that stated that “while this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”
Trump posted on Truth Social on March 21 that he was glad Mueller had died.
