London firms have gone on a “hiring spree” that saw the number of people in work soar during April, official figures revealed on Tuesday.

The capital enjoyed the biggest opening up of job vacancies and the second highest surge in employment in the country, reported the Office for National Statistics.

UK-wide, the number of workers in paid jobs surged for the fifth month in a row, up by 97,000 between March and April.

Gregory Thwaites, research director at the Resolution Foundation, said the capital was “bouncing back”.

He said: “London has been hit hardest by the economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, experiencing the biggest employment fall anywhere in the UK. But there are early signs that it is bouncing back as the economy begins to reopen, as the capital experienced rapid growth in employment and job vacancies last month.

“London still has huge numbers of people out of work or on furlough, and the rapid recovery needs to continue.”

Nationally, there were 772,000 fewer UK workers on payrolls than before the pandemic struck.
