Reading have come from behind to lead at Portsmouth, walsall lead at Brighton and at the Stadium of Light Jermain Defoe has just completed his hat-trick to make it Sunderland 6-3 Exeter – but the focus should e on the goals they have conceded rather than scored after another defensive shambles.

Peep, peep, peep

Second periods are go! (Apart from West Brom 0-0 Port Vale in the 8pm League Cup kick-of)

Seeing as it’s half-time everywhere apart from the scoreless game at The Hawthorns let’s help out Ian Copestake, who asks via email:

Evening, Alan. Seeking a soundtrack to my evening of perusing, I sought music recommendations that might take me (briefly) out of my Deep Purple obsession and into something actually of the current decade. I am now recovering from following a suggestion to try Bruno Mars. Please help.

I was at a tiny festival in Poland last week which included this and this among other highlights.

Notts County are back in front thanks to a Jon Stead penalty deep in injury time after Mark Bunn conceded a penalty! Boos at Stadium of Light at half-time, where Sunderland have shipped three against a League Two team. Get all the half-times here, including the Scottish League Cup, where Dunfermline lead Premiership side Dundee.

Bournemouth have turned on the style at Hartlepool, Junior Stanislas sends a tasty 25-yard free-kick into the net to make it 3-0.

Exeter are level again! Another cross from the left confuses the hopeless Sunderland defence and Tom McCready finishes. 3-3! Portsmouth are leading against another Championship side and one of the players who scored in the previous round against Derby has put them in front at home to Reading, Conor Chaplin.

Norwich lead at Rotherham: the ball is worked down the right, finally finds its way to Jonny Howson, who drills a low finish home from the edge of the area. Rapid Vienna are leading at Shakhtar now – Steffen Hofmann making it 2-1 on the night. And big news from Sweden, where Malmo have scored against Celtic to make it 3-3 on aggregate. If it ends that way, Malmo would advance on away goals. Get the latest here.

And scrap that comment about Sunderland – Exeter have pulled one back thanks to Manny Oyeleke. The shock is very much on at Villa Park, where Notts County lead. Villa’s expeienced defender Alan Hutton is robbed of possession and Genaro Snijders scores from long range via a heavy deflection. In the Champions League Armin Hodzic has made it 2-1 to Dinamo Zagreb on the night against Skenderbeu, making it 4-2 on aggregate. Monaco’s Andrea Raggi has made it 1-1 against Valencia but they also trail 4-2.

There will not be a shock at the Stadium of Light if the opening 16 minutes are anything to go by – Defoe doubles Sunderland’s lead having capitalised on some sloppy Exeter defending, tapping in from three yards with 16 minutes on the clock.

Peep peep peep!

We are underway across England and Europe!

At Kenilworth Road, Bojan Krkic makes his first appearance for Stoke since sustaining that horrific knee injury at Rochdale in the FA Cup in January. Steve Sidwell captains a strong visiting team against a youthful Luton.

Updated

West Bromwich Albion have made four changes for their tie against Port Vale but most importantly Saido Berahino is not in the squad after the club rejected a second bid from Tottenham Hotspur for the striker.

Lots of weakened Premier League teams tonight but the most notable is Leicester where Claudio Ranieri is living up to his Tinkerman nickname having named an entirely different starting XI to the side that drew with Tottenham last Saturday for tonight’s game. Four players make their first starts for the Foxes at Bury: Inler, Kanté, Fuchs and Benalouane.

If you are looking for the latest from Malmo v Celtic, you’ll have to click here.

Preamble

Welcome! Good evening! What a night of action this promises to be. We have Champions League play-off second legs, League Cup second round action and even some highlights from Scotland. So, put on the kettle, pull up a chair and get yourself ready for lots and lots of goals!

Champions League

The highlight sees Monaco and Valencia, two group stage regulars, collide at Stade Louis II with the La Liga team bringing a 3-1 advantage to France from the first leg. It is a tall order for last season’s conquerors of Arsenal, though Valencia are now without defensive rock Nicolás Otamendi.

Shakhtar Donetsk host (kinda) Rapid Vienna with the most slender of 1-0 leads, Dinamo Zagreb also have a one-goal cushion when they welcome the Albanian champions, Skenderbeu, to the Maksimir Stadium, while Basel face a tough task having drawn their home leg against Slavisa Jokanovic’s Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-2.

And, of course, we are not forgetting about Celtic’s trip to Malmo. You can join Barry Glendenning for live coverage of that very soon – link to follow.

League Cup

The opening round of the League Cup produced some notable surprises – Oxford hammering Brentford, Barnet returning to the competition with a thrilling victory at Millwall, Walsall’s 4-3 stunner at Nottingham Forest and Portsmouth’s victory at home to Derby County to name just a few. But now the Premier League teams minus those in European competition enter the fray. Who’s most likely to be stunned by lower league opponents? Will there be a result as jaw-dropping as MK Dons’ victory over an insipid Manchester United at this stage last season?

There are eight Premier League v League Two ties. Stoke head for Kenilworth Road to take on Luton Town, Aston Villa take on Notts County, West Brom welcome Port Vale and York make the long trip to Swansea. Bury host Leicester City. There is a mammoth journey in store for Exeter who take on Sunderland, Northampton also head to the northeast, where Newcastle await, while Bournemouth also make a similarly lengthy trek to face Hartlepool.

Other games involving top flight sides are: Crystal Palace v Shrewsbury, Preston v Watford and Rotherham v Norwich. Everton’s trip to Barnsley is tomorrow. A minute of silence will be held at all games before kick-off in memory of those who died in the Shoreham air disaster.

All games kick-off at 7.45pm BST with the exception of West Brom v Port Vale – that begins at 8pm. Oh and we will have League Cup third round draw for you, too, at around 9.45pm.
