Capel Street and Parliament Street pedestrianisation: Everything you need to know about new trial

The much sought after pedestrianisation of Capel and Parliament Street is set to begin this evening and run for the next six weekend evenings.

Surrounding side streets will also see traffic removed for the evenings.

The project is being carried out by the city's recovery task force which was set up in light of the pandemic to support businesses and outdoor dining.

Once the trial is finished, it will be assessed by DCC to see if it was a success.

So, what does this change for the next six weekends?

The traffic-free trial of Capel and Parliament Street will make the following streets basically traffic free including:

  • Parnell St. from Ryders Row to Capel St.
  • Little Britain St. from Campbell’s Court to Capel St.
  • Mary St. from Jervis Lane Upper to Capel St.
  • Mary St. Little from Anglesea Row to Capel St.
  • Mary’s Abbey from Aran St. to Capel St.
  • Abbey St. from Jervis Lane Upper to Capel St.
  • Strand St. Little from Aran St. to Capel St.
  • Strand St. from Jervis St. to Capel St.
  • Essex Gate from Exchange St. to Parliament St.
  • Essex St. East from Sycamore St. to Parliament St.
A number of surrounding streets will be traffic-free due to the Capel Street trial (DCC)

The current build-outs on Capel Street that provide space for outdoor dining will remain in place.

The section of Capel Street between Ryders Row and Parnell Street is now closed to traffic permanently 24/7.

Five disabled bays on Capel Street have been moved to accommodate the traffic-free trial. They are now at the following locations:

  • Two on Swifts Row
  • Two on Capel Street (between Ryders Row and Parnell Street)
  • One on Ormond Quay

A further two disabled bays on East Essex Street will be moved to Fishamble Street.

Bus diversions will be in place while the trial is carried out. The diversions will be for buses that serve Parliament Street via Bachelors Walk, namely the 69 and 79a.
