CAPE Launches Showrunners Incubator With Starz To Boost Diversity

CAPE New Writers Fellowship has propelled many Asian and Pacific Islander talents to success.

Asian and Pacific Islander writers in the television industry have found a valuable resource in the CAPE New Writers Fellowship, a renowned entry-level program that has propelled many talents to success. Now, the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) is broadening its scope with the introduction of the CAPE Showrunners Incubator, supported by Starz's #TakeTheLead diversity initiative for its inaugural year.

The new incubator aims to provide mentorship and resources to upper-level API TV writers, offering them the support needed to break through barriers and reach new heights in their careers. CAPE's Executive Director highlighted the importance of showrunners and creative executives in shaping the content that reaches audiences, emphasizing the need for diverse voices in mainstream media.

Starz's commitment to covering application fees for this year's program underscores its dedication to fostering inclusivity in the industry. While prioritizing writers with upper-level experience, the incubator will also consider applicants with shows in active development, ensuring a diverse pool of talent.

The partnership between CAPE and Starz represents a significant step towards nurturing a new generation of Asian and Pacific Islander storytellers, enriching the creative landscape with fresh perspectives. The program's launch at CAPE's Radiance gala, honoring API women and non-binary individuals in entertainment, further solidifies its commitment to empowering underrepresented voices.

Esteemed API showrunners, including Melinda Hsu, Albert Kim, Chris Collins, Georgia Lee, Keto Shimizu, Monica Macer, and Sanjay Shah, will contribute as mentors and speakers, sharing their expertise and insights with program participants. Their involvement underscores the industry's collective effort to create a more inclusive and diverse entertainment landscape.
