Cap implications if Vikings use Kaare Vedvik as kicker and punter

On Sunday, the Vikings traded a fifth-round pick to the Ravens for Kaare Vedvik.

Vedvik will likely be the team’s starting kicker, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported that the team could also use him as a punter.

It doesn’t seem likely the Vikings would just roster Vedvic and no other punter (imagine if Vedvic got injured), but it doesn’t hurt to look at how that would impact the Vikings as far as money is concerned.

In 2019, Vedvik is due $570,000.

If the Vikings use him as both positions and decide to cut kicker Dan Bailey and punter Matt Wile, that would free up a combined $1.645 million. The Vikings don’t have. to pay a penalty to cut either player.

So the difference there would be $1.075 million, which would put Minnesota’s total cap space at $6,195,509 million, per Over The Cap.

That’s significant because it opens up room for the Vikings to stay flexible throughout the season with a free agent, or absorbing a contract via trade.

Again, it seems unlikely that the Vikings would roster just Vedvik as a kicker and punter, but it’s an interesting thought exercise that opens up cap space for the Vikings.
