The first ever community garden fayre in Canton has been heralded as a 'huge success' – bringing local groups, representatives and people together to celebrate the area.
The event took place on Saturday in Victoria Park as a bid to raise the profile of gardening projects and promote local sustainability and collective responsibility for the appearance of area.
Canton councillor Ramesh Patel said:
"The event was very well attended and a huge success – hopefully it will be repeated next year.
"We want to get more people involved in growing things and and making the area more attractive with plants and gardens."
Canton community gardens was set up in September last year and already has one community garden at Chapter Arts Centre.
Chairman of the project Mike Goode said the group had seen a steep increase in the number of members and the fayre had been a great day for those wanting to learn more about their local environment and sustainability.
He said:
"We want to bring the community together to support the area and see more of their local businesses, artists and groups.
"The weather was perfect and the six months planning paid off."
The fair saw stalls including a honey maker from Ely, Canton shop Eco Homes Wales, Canton Carbon Catchers.
Children from local schools also brought in their potted welly-boot plants for a competition judged by Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan and AM Rhodri Mrogan. First place prize went to Lansdowne primary school pupil Molly Pritchard.
Rhodri Morgan said:
"This is a real chance for Canton residents to roll up their sleeves, get their hands and shoes dirty and create something really special for the whole community. At the same time, it will be promoting healthy eating, fresh tasting food and good household economics by reducing spend in the supermarkets.
"Saturday's Fayre was a brilliant success and it will undoubtedly be the first of many. There was a great turnout with scores of people turning up to see what the excellent range of weird and wonderful stalls with something for everyone."
Another plot of land is currently being looked at near Lawrenny Avenue with consultation with residents underway for a wildlife area for the community.
