Canon Medical Systems Corp. announced Monday that it aims to sell 20 mobile computed tomography (CT) systems in Japan and overseas in the next few years. The high-performance CT machines, used to diagnose pneumonia and other diseases, are installed in containers and transported by trailer truck.
Canon Medical Systems, based in Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture, is a subsidiary of Canon Inc.
The mobile CT systems can be used outside hospitals to isolate patients infected with the novel coronavirus. In addition, they can be dispatched to hospitals affected by natural disasters. The mobile CT systems will be sold to core hospitals and local governments.
The new CT systems will reduce the examination time from about 10 seconds to 4 seconds. The operator's room and the examination room in the container are separated, and an air conditioning system collects and neutralizes viruses in airborne droplets.
President Toshio Takiguchi said at the briefing, "There will be a growing need to set up emergency medical systems for emergencies such as unknown pandemics."
