A computed tomography (CT) image system, which is used to diagnose pneumonia and other diseases, inside a container is starting to be used in the medical field for the novel coronavirus. The mobile CT system can be transported freely on a trailer and set up in a parking lot, and is expected to play an active role as a temporary medical facility.
The container CT was developed by Canon Medical Systems Corp., a medical equipment manufacturer in Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture, to deal with infectious diseases.
The large doughnut-shaped CT system is installed inside a 12-meter-long container and has been rented since Saturday to the Totsuka Kyouritsu Daini Hospital in Yokohama, which cannot use its own CT system due to renewal work. It is being set up in a corner of the hospital's parking lot.
"The CT system is indispensable for confirming pneumonia in patients with COVID-19. We can't afford to stop our medical services, so we are very grateful for the loan," an official from the hospital said.
Normally, CT systems are installed in a single room in a hospital, but there are many restrictions at institutions dealing with the coronavirus such as the need to separate the movements of COVID-19 patients and other patients. If the container is set up in a parking lot, it will be possible to efficiently examine those with COVID-19 without having them come into contact with other patients, according to the corporation.
