Canoe on M8 carriageway sparks chaos as lane forced to close due to hazard

A lane of the M8 has been closed due to a canoe on the carriageway as road users have been urged to 'swim over to lanes two and three'.

Lane one of the M8 westbound, between J27A and J28, has been shut due to an unusual mode of transport on the road.

Motorists are being urged to take care on approach after a canoe came loose from a car around 8.35pm and fell onto the carriageway.

The owner has stopped to collect it and police officers are currently on the scene.

Traffic Scotland tweeted a warning and made light of the situation as they asked people to "swim" between lanes.

They said: "#M8 hazard. Lane 1 of 3 is closed on the M8 westbound between J27A and J28 due to a canoe on the carriageway.

Please #TakeCare on approach. The owner has stopped to collect it.

"Please swim over to lanes 2/3. Police are en route."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a boat having come loose from a vehicle on the M8 westbound between junctions 27A and 28 around 8.30pm on Wednesday, 23 June.

"One lane is currently blocked and officers are in attendance."
