Cannes 2011: Air, Gilles Jacob, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun … and Joe Cornish

In the first of two special Cannes editions of Film Weekly Jason Solomons meets Palme d'Or juror and great Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun to discuss his new-found friendship with the jury president, Robert De Niro, and his latest film, A Screaming Man, which opens in the UK today.

Jason talks to Joe Cornish, director of Attack the Block, also released this week in Britain, but whipping up a storm at the Cannes market.

Xan Brooks joins Jason to assess the first few days of the 64th festival, in particular the great British hope in competition Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin, plus controversial drama Sleeping Beauty.

The first film to screen at this year's festival was a restored version of Trip to the Moon by George Méliès, for which the French band Air have penned a new soundtrack. Jason met up with Nicolas and JB from the band to talk cinematic history.

We wrap things up with an interview with veteran festival president, Gilles Jacob, who discusses his latest memoir, Citizen Cannes, published by Phaidon, and how, as artistic director, he nurtured the festival to its current pre-eminence.
