'Cannabis sweets' among €1.2million worth of drugs seized at Dublin Port as man arrested

Cannabis infused "jelly sweets" were among €1.2million worth of drugs seized at Dublin Port on Thursday.

The bizarre find was made by Revenue Officers with the help of detector dog James and their mobile x-ray scanner.

They discovered 55kgs of herbal cannabis and 2kgs of cannabis infused sweets, concealed in suitcases.

They had been stored in the driver's cab of a commercial vehicle which arrived from Holyhead.

An Irishman, aged in his 50s, was arrested by gardai.

A Revenue spokesman said: "Yesterday, as a result of routine operations, Revenue officers seized 55kgs of herbal cannabis and 2kgs of cannabis infused ‘jelly sweets’ at Dublin Port. The illegal drugs have a combined estimated value of €1.2 million.

"With the assistance of detector dog James and Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner, the drugs were discovered concealed in suitcases that were stored in the driver’s cab of a commercial vehicle, which had disembarked a ferry from Holyhead.

"An Irish man in his 50’s was arrested by An Garda Síochána and investigations are ongoing.

"These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the importation of illegal drugs. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1800 295 295."
