Cannabis is not a recreational drug - 'it is a killer', judge warns

A judge has warned people to stop regarding cannabis as a recreational drug and said: "It is a killer."

He made the comment at Nottingham Crown Court where Eric Yeboah admitted offering to supply the drug.

Judge Stuart Rafferty QC told him: "Come with me one day to a mental health unit and see people who are in drug-induced psychosis, almost always cannabis.

"It is a killer," he told Yeboah, 35, of Overdale Road, Basford who was given an 18-month prison term, suspended for two years.

The court heard that Yeboah was initially caught with the drug at his previous address in Nottingham on October 11, 2017 and again 11 months later.

The judge said: "You were stupid enough or arrogant enough to commit the same offence again when on bail.

"That is the sort of warped thinking cannabis can produce.

"You have now turned yourself around, going into business with real prospects. Don't throw it away just for a stupid draw on a reefer. It is just not worth it."

Gareth Gimson, prosecuting, said police officers searched Yeboah's home and he told them: "I smoke loads of weed."

Officers found cannabis worth £725 and £380 in cash. A mobile phone revealed text messages offering to supply drugs, with one message dated May 6, 2016.

Another search was carried out on October 12, 2017 when £1,122 was seized along with cannabis worth around £500.

He appeared to be supplying "friends and associates." Mr Gimson added: "It is commercial supply to other users, not a typical scenario of street dealing."

Robert Lassey, mitigating, said that Yeboah appeared to have paid £170 for an ounce of cannabis and would smoke half himself. He would sell the remainder to "a small and very close circle of friends," raising enough money buy another ounce.

"It is not street dealing," added Mr Lassey. All the cash has been confiscated.
