Cannabis in a nappy box among drugs seized in Palm Island bust during lockdown

Police seized a range of drugs, liquor, and cash during a drug operation targeting Palm Island.

North Queensland police have charged 25 people after an operation targeting the drug trade between Palm Island and Townsville.

Officers seized 1.6 kilograms of cannabis, methylamphetamine, prescription drugs, 19 litres of alcohol, and more than $7,500 in cash throughout April.

The remote Indigenous community was locked down for more than 11 weeks under strict COVID-19 biosecurity measures.

Police allege the offenders used commercial air and marine freight services to conceal and transport dangerous drugs and alcohol.

In one incident, officers searched an aircraft and found almost half a kilogram of cannabis hidden a nappy box destined for Palm Island.

More drugs were found stashed in a child's walker box.

A 20-year-old Palm Island woman was charged with attempted possession and supplying dangerous drugs and will face court next month.

A 26-year-old Palm Island man has also been charged with drug supply and possession offences.

A total of 25 people are facing 53 charges a result of the seizures.

Police said the operation led to a drop in property crime and offences against the people of Palm Island.
