Cannabis farm uncovered after police searched Gateshead High Street property

Police officers found a cannabis farm in Gateshead after noticing a strong smell coming from a property.

Northumbria Police were on Gateshead High Street on Wednesday to execute a warrant for an unrelated reason when they became suspicious of a neighbouring property.

Officers went inside and found around 90 cannabis plants. The electricity supply had also been bypassed.

The farm has been dismantled and the plants will be destroyed, police say.

Investigations are now being carried out and anyone with information about the farm is being urged to contact officers.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "While executing a warrant at an address on Gateshead High Street, officers became suspicious of a neighbouring property after a noticing strong smell of cannabis.

"Upon entering the second property, officers discovered a small cannabis farm of around 90 plants and noticed the electricity had been bypassed.

"The farm was dismantled and the plants seized for destruction. Enquiries remain ongoing.

"Anyone with information can contact police by using the Tell us Something page on our website, quoting log 182 260521."
