Cannabis cultivation found in Hamilton house was worth up to £128,000

A man has admitted looking after a Hamilton cannabis cultivation worth up to £128,000.

More than 200 plants were found in the rented three-bedroom detached house in Brora Crescent.

Mario Eshja, 39, now of Nansen Street, Glasgow, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted producing cannabis on February 18 this year.

Rebecca Clark, prosecuting, said police officers went to the house with a warrant after a tip-off.

She told the court: “All the curtains were closed and there was a strong smell of cannabis.

“Mr Eshja answered the door and the officers heard fans operating upstairs.

“He invited them in, pointed upstairs and said ‘Plants, plants’.”

Ms Clark said 214 plants, worth between £42,000 and £128,000, were seized. These were growing in rooms downstairs and upstairs.

Eshja, who rented the house at the time, told the officers: “My difficulty is I was not working.

“If I had a proper job I wouldn’t have got involved in something like this.”

The court heard that Eshja, who was accompanied by an Albanian interpreter, is a first offender.

Sheriff Ray Small called for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order.

Sentence was deferred until next month and Eshja was allowed to remain on bail.
