Canelo Alvarez weight decision opens door for Callum Smith rematch after Ilunga Makabu fight

Callum Smith has previously spoken about his desire for a rematch against Canelo Alvarez - and the door may have been opened in the future.

The Mexican fighter defeated the Liverpool boxer in December last year, with Canelo securing the WBA and WBC super-middleweight titles.

Canelo has gone on to become a unified champion following his victory over Caleb Plant and is now moving up to cruiserweight level, where he'll fight Ilunga Makabu for the WBC title.

While Canelo, already a four-weight world champion, is looking to secure success at a fifth weight class, a potential future bout with Smith may be viable.

That is something that Smith himself has spoken about previously and left the door open for such a bout, though he expressed doubt it could happen.

Speaking earlier this year, Smith said: “I’d love a rematch. He beat me and beat me well, no excuses, but I do believe we’ll see a better version of me at 175.

“That’s my only regret on the fight that we never saw the best version of me in with him. I didn’t perform on the night, and that’s that. That’s on me.

“If I were offered the fight at 175, I’d jump at it if I was a world champion. I’m not going to hold my breath on that one.

“I do believe he’ll move up at some point, and I think he’ll go wherever he wants to. Yeah, I think we’ll see a better version of me at 175. I think we’ll see a better version of him at 175, and you’ll definitely see a better version of me."

With Canelo having changed weight class, it's opened the door for a potential rematch between the pair further down the line.
