Canelo Alvarez takes inspiration from Mexican F1 star Sergio Perez ahead of title fight

Canelo Alvarez has taken inspiration from his countryman and F1 star Sergio "Checo" Perez ahead of his title fight with Caleb Plant this weekend.

Guadalajara's Alvarez will look to become the first-ever undisputed super-middleweight champion in boxing history when he fights undefeated Plant.

Perez - who is also from Guadalajara - looks for his second win of the calendar year this weekend in the Mexican Grand Prix.

Despite only being brought into Red Bull to support star driver Max Verstappen, Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in June and has three third-place finishes in 2021.

The Mexican has never finished higher than seventh at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in Mexico City as he searches for a dream win this weekend.

And Alvarez said whilst he hasn't talked with Perez he is inspired by his story.

"I haven't gotten to talk to Sergio Perez. But it motivates me, absolutely," he said at Wednesday's pre-fight press conference.

"The fact I can make history as well as Sergio can. Hopefully, it can happen that way. It can be an unbelievable and unforgettable weekend for Mexican fans everywhere."

Perez is currently fourth place in the F1 standings, behind Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Alvarez will fight for the fourth time in less than twelve months when he meets Plant in Las Vegas.

The pound-for-pound No.1 reclaimed world titles at 168lbs last December, outpointing Callum Smith to win the WBC, WBA and The Ring belts.

Alvarez then stopped Avni Yildrim in February and won Billy Joe Saunders' WBO title in May.

Plant hasn't fought since defending his IBF title for the third time against Caleb Truax in January.

The 29-year-old won the title in 2019 but faces a big step-up against Alvarez having fought limited competition during his reign as champion.

And Alvarez predicts he will stop Plant in "seven to nine rounds" to become the undisputed champion.

"For me it does mean a lot. For my history, for my legacy, it means a lot. That's why we are here and Saturday night, we are gonna make history," he said.

"He's a good fighter with a lot of skills, but he's nothing new for me. I've been in there with a lot of good fighters, so it's nothing different.

"I think in my opinion, it's going to be seven to nine rounds."

But Plant has insisted he isn't turning up to hand his belt over to Alvarez and will give the Mexican a tough test.

"I think he knows he's got someone in front of him who's not just here to hand his belt over, not just here to pick up a check. Like I said, I'm here to pick up those belts," he said.
