Canelo Alvarez ramps up negotiations for Billy Joe Saunders showdown on May 2

Canelo Alvarez has his sights set on a May 2 showdown with Billy Joe Saunders in Las Vegas.

The Mexican currently holds the WBA super-middleweight world title, while Saunders is the WBO champion.

Alvarez is plotting his next appearance in the ring, and the Athletic report his first choice is a face-off with Saunders on the Cinco De Mayo celebratory weekend.

Fellow Brit Callum Smith was also in the running for a clash with Alvarez, but Saunders is a more appealing prospect due to his WBO belt.

Following his step up to light-heavyweight back in November, Alvarez is set to drop down to super-middleweight again to fight Saunders at 168pounds.

Alvarez has fought just once at that limit in the past, and won in devastating fashion against Liverpool-born Rocky Fielding inside four rounds.

The 29-year-old became a four-weight world champion with an 11th-round knockout victory over Sergey Kovalev last time out, but is now keen to unify the super-middleweight division.

He has fought regularly on the Cinco De Mayo weekend, beating Daniel Jacobs on points last year.

Saunders is unbeaten and has one successful defence of his WBO title (PA)

Meanwhile Saunders, 30, was last in action in Los Angeles in November against Marceloa Esteban Coceres, whom he knocked out in the penultimate round.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is believed to be keen to pitch Saunders against Alvarez, who has a 10-fight deal with U.S streaming site DAZN.

The Welwyn Garden City boxer is a big name, and boasts an unbeaten record, but would be the underdog for a bout with Alvarez, who has some huge names on his CV, and is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.

A third bout with Gennady Golovkin was mooted, but Alvarez is not interested in completing the trilogy against the Kazakhstani at the moment.

Alvarez was unimpressed by Golovkin's last showing versus Sergiy Derevyanchenko in October.

Golovkin is instead in line to defend his two middleweight titles against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta on March 28.
