Canelo Alvarez hints at time off as hectic schedule culminates with Caleb Plant knockout

Canelo Alvarez plans to take time off after a hectic 11-month schedule to have seen him fight four times.

The Mexcian, who became only the sixth man to be a four-belt champion by defeating Caleb Plant in Las Vegas on Saturday evening, has had an unusually busy schedule of late, beating Callum Smith, Avni Yıldırım, Billy Joe Saunders and Plant since December 2020.

Alvarez knocked Plant out in the 11th round at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and, while he made no definitive statement as to what lies ahead, did hint now was the time to take a back seat.

“The training sessions, trying to make weight, that’s when you feel the tiredness of it all,” he said following Saturday evening’s bout.

“Right now, I feel great. My body is responding splendidly. Now I just need some time to rest and to prepare for the next challenge.”

Quite what that next challenge is remains to be seen but, with the super-middleweight division conquered, it will be fascinating to see where Alvarez goes next.

The momentum continues.
