Candidates clash over campaigning in the wake of London Bridge terror attack

Gateshead election candidates have clashed over whether canvassing should have been paused in the wake of the murders at London Bridge.

The major UK parties suspended their election campaigning on Friday, following a knife attack in which and three injured by a man wearing a fake suicide vest.

Terror suspect Usman Khan was shot dead by police, and in the wake of the shock attack Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat leaders volunteered to suspend their election activities.

The major parties agreed on Saturday that the campaign should not remain on hold, "as a statement against those who wish to attack our democracy". But both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn cancelled events on Saturday, with the Prime Minister saying he would not be campaigning at all on Saturday.

Labour scrapped an "NHS summit" which was due to be held in Yorkshire, and the Liberal Democrats said they would longer go ahead with their Stop  Brexit  rally in London.

In Gateshead, Labour candidate Ian Mearns tweeted criticism of local Tory campaigners, for being out on the doorstep in the morning immediately after the attack.

He said said: "Interesting to see Tories out campaigning today when Nationally major political parties had “agreed” to suspend campaigning for the day as a mark of respect following the London Bridge Terrorist attack."

But the Twitter account for Gateshead Conservatives hit back, saying: "Campaigning was suspended in London, but resumed at a local level. If you had contacted us and discussed a local suspension we would have been happy to do so. Our thoughts are with those affected by the incident and this is not the time to make a political point."

The row escalated, with Mr Means replying: "Campaigning was suspended nationally end of: Meanwhile you carried on! Not a political point at all, just simply letting people know how low some people are willing to stoop!"

But the Conservatives, campaigning for Jane Macbean, responded claiming it had been agreed that the campaign could resume in the morning.
